What are Number Facts?

Number facts are basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations that children should learn to recall instantly with no working out (in other words, they need to learn they by heart).

Number facts are sometimes referred to as number bonds (addition and subtraction) and timetables with related division facts (multiplication and division).

By the end of Year 3:

• Addition and subtraction facts to 20 (including number bonds to 20). This means all the different combinations of adding and subtracting numbers to a total of 20 (for example: 2+16=18, 17-5=12, 6+7=13 etc)
• Use the number bonds to 20 to derive related facts to 1000. For example: know if 2+3=5 then 20+30=50 and therefore 200+300=500.
• Multiplication and related division facts for 2, 3, 5, and 10 timetables.
• Multiplication and related division facts for 4, 6 and 8 timetables. Children will be taught the connection between the 2, 4 and 8 timetables through doubling and halving (if 2X3=6 then 4X3=12) and the same for the relationship between the 3 and 6 timetables.
