The Governing Board

Welcome to the Governance section of The Cathedral School of St Peter & St John RC Primary School.

Our Governing Board plays a vital role in ensuring that our school continues to provide a high-quality Catholic education in a safe, welcoming and nurturing environment.

Working closely with the Headteacher and senior leadership team, governors provide strategic leadership, support and constructive challenge. They help shape the school's future, monitor educational standards and ensure that resources are used effectively to achieve the best possible outcomes for our children.

As a Catholic school, our governors are also committed to preserving and promoting our distinctive Catholic identity, ensuring that Gospel values remain at the heart of school life.

Our Governing Board operates through a circle-of-governance approach, with governors working collaboratively to fulfil their strategic responsibilities.

How Our Governing Board Works

Our Governing Board works collaboratively to provide strategic leadership and effective oversight of The Cathedral School of St Peter & St John RC Primary School.

Governors bring a range of skills, knowledge and experience to support the school's development, uphold its Catholic ethos and ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of our children.

Our key responsibilities

  • Strategic leadership: Working with school leaders to establish the school's vision, values and long-term priorities.

  • Educational standards: Monitoring pupil achievement, progress, attendance and school improvement, while holding school leaders to account.

  • Financial oversight: Ensuring that the school's financial resources are managed effectively and provide value for money.

  • Safeguarding and wellbeing: Providing strategic oversight of safeguarding arrangements and supporting a safe, inclusive school environment.

  • Accountability: Asking questions, reviewing evidence and providing appropriate support and challenge to school leaders.

Our approach to governance

The Governing Board operates through a collaborative circle-of-governance approach. Governors work together to consider the school's priorities, review information and make strategic decisions. The Headteacher and senior leadership team are responsible for the day-to-day management of the school and for implementing the agreed strategic direction.

Where a matter requires a separate panel, such as a complaint, pupil exclusion or staff disciplinary appeal, governors are convened in accordance with the relevant terms of reference. These panels meet as required and follow the procedures applicable to the matter being considered.

The Board is committed to effective, transparent and responsible governance, regularly reviewing its work and ensuring that its arrangements remain appropriate and effective.
