The novel we have been studying is

The Firework-Maker's Daughter by Philip Pullman.

The story centres around a girl called Lila who wants nothing more than to become a Firework Maker.

In order to do this she must make a perilous journey to face the formidable Fire-Fiend.

Not realising that she needs special protection, Lila sets off on the journey alone.

Her friends chase after her, but will they reach her in time?
