Alma Thomas: 1891-1978
She was an African American artist who began as an Art teacher and painted in her spare time.
When she retired, she became a full time painter.
She used bright colours to paint a mosaic affect, her work was very colourful! She was the first black woman to have her own exhibition in the Museum of American Art and have her her art work displayed in the White House.
