Geography

Intent

At the Cathedral School of St Peter and John RC Primary, we know the importance of our geography curriculum in teaching the children at our school about the world around them. It is our intention that through a carefully designed curriculum, our children will be equipped with the skills and knowledge they will need to follow whichever path in life they choose. Through the study of local geography and of the geography of the wider world, our children learn about how people, communities and environments are interdependent. They learn about the fragility of God’s world and how we are the caretakers who must look after it. We aim for our children to be informed and inquisitive about geographical issues. We want them to ask questions, challenge and seek solutions to world issues like hunger, poverty and climate change.

Implementation

Our curriculum is designed to be an engaging programme that is relevant to our children and their place in the world. Our curriculum is built around the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and the Primary National Curriculum. Well-structured planning and assessment ensures our children make good progress in their geography learning. Throughout our Early Years Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, progression in our curriculum helps the children build on their knowledge and understanding of geography year on year, preparing them for secondary school and beyond. Knowledge organisers and progression documents are in place to support each class with clearly planned knowledge, skills and vocabulary to be taught in each unit. Through carefully planned educational visits, whole school super learning days and use of engaging resources within the classroom, our children gain experience of the world around them and acquire the skills they will need in the future. Summative assessments are made at the end of each unit to make sure all our children make good progress. The geography curriculum is regularly monitored by the Geography lead to ensure staff are supported in their planning and delivery of lessons and that teaching and learning in geography is of a high standard across the school.

If you would like to see an example of the knowledge organisers that the children use in school, please speak to your child's teacher or email school.
