Pupil Premium Strategy 2019 - 2020

For this financial year 2020/2021 the school is expected to receive a total of £83,358. 

57 pupils are eligible in years Reception to year 6 at the standard amount (£1,345 per pupil). There may also be a number of children who attract an enhanced premium each (£2,345) as post "looked-after" children.  There is also a small amount of early years premium funding totalling £2,003. 


Pupil premium funding is very important in improving progress and attainment in school, narrowing the gaps in education and even more so important because of the lockdown this year due to Covid-19 and the impact this has had on the education of our children. 


We expect to use the majority of this funding as follows:

Contribution to staffing costs:  £61,383

Provision of Education Welfare Officer from Salford Local Authority: £4,047

Additional curriculum resources: £2,000

Mathematics and Literacy: £7,500

Staff training and continuous professional development: £4,500

Attendance initiative and rewards: £1,500

ICT subscriptions: £2,030

Provision of Educational Psychology Services (Salford LA): £1,140

Additional towards SEN provision in school - cost to be determined

The Pupil Premium funding has supported schools to rethink the ways in which they raise standards for disadvantaged pupils.  It is more vital than ever that the decisions about using the funding are part of an effective strategy.  It is an Ofsted expectation that schools should be closing the gap against non-disadvantaged pupils nationally.


Our school understands that an important part of a school's responsibility for raising achievement is not only to play a part in deciding on the best focus for a strategy and being responsible for implementing it, but also the accountability that is held for the use of the pupil premium and for ensuring the best outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.


The Cathedral School of St Peter and St John RC Primary acknowledges that it needs to develop skills as well as knowledge in all our children ultimately equipping them all with skills that can be life changing for disadvantaged children.


Our school aims to develop a pupil premium strategy that will focus relentlessly on the quality of teaching and learning in each part of the school whilst also addressing potential out of school barriers.  We will be actively examining excellent practice in other schools and rigorously monitoring the impact of pupil premium strategies to further develop our own.


What is Pupil Premium Funding?


The Pupil Premium was introduced by the Coalition Government in April 2011 to provide additional support for "looked-after" children and those from low income families (those in receipt of free school meals).  The extra funding is made available to schools to help them narrow the attainment gap that still exists between pupils from disadvantaged and more affluent backgrounds.

Eligibility for the pupil premium in 2012/2013 was extended to pupils who had been eligible for free school meals at any point in the previous 6 years (known as the Free School Meals Ever 6 (FSM Ever6) measure).

Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months and a smaller amount for the children of service personnel.

Currently, every eligible child in reception to year 6 class attracts £1,345 in pupil premium funding, and for any children who have local authority looked-after status, or classified as post-looked after,  they attract £1,645 each and £2,345 respectively.. (Looked after children (LAC) defined in Children Act 1989 as one who is in the care of, or provided with accommodation by, an English local authority, Children who have ceased to be looked after by a local authority in England and Wales because of adoption, a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order).


Schools are free to spend the pupil premium as they see fit. However, they are accountable for how they use the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families and the other target groups.  Pupil premium is now received for pupils from Nursery Class to year 6.


The Cathedral school of St Peter and St John RC Primary received the following amounts of pupil premium funding in these financial years:

2018/19 ~ £95,980

2019/20 ~ £86,632 



Pupil Premium funding, received since it first became available, has enabled school to offer the following so far:

  • 1 to 1 tuition from teacher for identified group in reading.
  • Small group support within class for numeracy/reading/writing
  • Employment of teaching assistants to deliver specified intervention programmes
  • Speech/language “buy in” service to identify and support early intervention in EYFS and KS1 by providing strategies and professional advice.
  • Retention of learning mentor roll to provide home/school link support in regard to attendance and punctuality by monitoring

          daily attendance also linking up with outside agencies to support children being in school (till 2016)

  • Provide support within class to pupils with behaviour issues
  • Enrichment to support teaching and learning by funding/subsidising educational visits.
  • Buy in educational consultants to advise staff on strategies that will impact on teaching and learning.
  • The employment of social worker for one day a week to work with families/pupils that have high need but do not trigger support from local authority services. This provides nurture work for emotional issues and guidance for parents.
  • “Top up” support from Educational Psychology service to meet the high need of referrals.
  • “Incredible years” trained staff to work with parent support groups on the Triple P programme.
  • Buy in extra music tuition for all pupils.
  • Subsidised residential visits for activity weekends for yr 5/6 pupils
  • Pay for breakfast or after-school clubs where appropriate and there is a need.
  • Additional Swimming lessons for pupils.
  • Social Worker provision via CARITAS.
  • Attendance support from the Salford LA Education Welfare Service.
  • Dance tuition.
  • Staff training to qualification level, to provide  counselling therapy/mindfulness and wellbeing for pupils.


As a school in receipt of this funding we must be accountable to school Governors. Therefore we update Governors who regularly question how we allocate the funding, and more importantly the impact on teaching and learning. This is measured by the progress children make.
