Reception

Welcome to the Reception Class page of our school website. We hope that you will find lots of useful information and enjoy reading about the wonderful learning that takes place in our class.

Our class team consists of Mrs Hamer, Mrs McFadden, Miss Walsh and of course, our wonderful children.

Getting hooked on books!

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a huge difference to children's attitudes to reading and their educational achievements. In the EYFS, we want to ensure that all children develop a love of books and reading.

Every Wednesday at 2.45pm, we host a story session. Parents and Carers are invited to listen to the story with their child and choose a story book from our extensive library to share with their child at home. All are welcome.

Inspired by nature

We have been looking at the work of Andy Goldsworthy, a sculptor and artist who uses natural materials to create fabulous works of art. We were inspired by images of his work and decided to create our own works of art using a range of natural materials. I'm sure you will agree, the children are displaying some wonderful creative flair.

Exploring Autumn

The EYFS children had a great time exploring Heaton Park and looking at the changes that happen during Autumn.

As part of our autumn celebrations, we discussed harvest time and harvest festivals. We looked at a range of vegetables that are harvested and decided we would use them to make our own vegetable soup. We had fun peeling, slicing and chopping the vegetables. However, the best part was eating the soup. As Tomas said “it was yummy”.

We have been learning about another festival that takes place in Autumn called Diwali - the Festival of Lights which is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs across the world. We learned that families celebrate Diwali by decorating their houses with lights, candles and colourful designs. We made our own Diya pots using clay. We then painted them and put a candle in them before taking them home to share with our families.

We love the Autumn season!  It's a great chance for us to read one of our favourite stories...'room on the broom' and dress up!

Silly Socks Day!

We love winning a class attendance award. It gives us the opportunity to do fun things such as wearing odd socks for school. We had a great time comparing socks and looking at all the different patterns and designs.

Look out, look out there's someone about!

Look out, look out...there's someone about!

What has been happening in the EYFS? We came into school to find our toys were frozen within blocks of ice. "Oh no" said Olivia, "it must have been Jack Frost".

We needed to think of ways to rescue our toys... we decided that we needed the ice to melt in order for the toys to be free. We explored how we could make the ice melt faster and we found out that salt was really good for this.

On Shrove Tuesday, we had a great time making pancakes. We enjoyed measuring, mixing, stirring and tossing the pancakes. But we saved the best bit untl last...eating the pancakes!
