Running Wild

The half term, our learning in English has been based around the fantastic story 'Running Wild' by Michael Morpurgo. The end outcome of the unit is to write a new chapter to feature in the story with the focus of adventure story writing. The children have immersed themselves by listening to the audio book and delving deep in to the themes and characters.

First the children thought about explorer characters and what they would need. They discussed the personality needed of a character to survive in the wild.

The children then began to think about the themes within the story and how an adventure story is not all action. It also requires themes such as hope, friendship, loyalty and survival.

The children worked hard with the writing phases; focusing on detailed setting descriptions, including a variety of action, description and speech and creating suspense with describing to the reader rather that explicitly telling. Once planned, the children created their own chapter and then used the editing process to improve further.
