Catholic Social Teaching

Family and Community

Year 1 explored our school mission statement and learned that we are part of God’s loving family, called to grow together by supporting, challenging and inspiring one another. Through stories, discussion and shared activities, the children reflected on what it means to belong to a community and how everyone has an important part to play. This linked to the Catholic Social Teaching principle of Participation, as pupils learned that we are all invited to take part in the life of our school, to use our voices, and to care for one another so that our community can flourish together in love and respect.

Dignity of the Human Person

In Year 1, the children explored that we are all brothers and sisters in God’s family and that we are called to love and look after one another. Linking to Catholic Social Teaching and the principle of human dignity, the children learned that every person is special, valued and deserving of kindness because they are made in the image of God. Through discussion and role play, they thought about how we can show care and respect for others in everyday actions. They then created their own “I will…” promises, such as “I will help my friend” and “I will share my toys”, showing how small acts of love help our community to grow together. This helped the children understand that when we treat others with kindness and respect, we are living out Jesus’ message and recognising that we are all brothers and sisters.

Jesus said "Serve one another with the gifts each of you received" 1 Peter 4:10

This helped the children to understand that we can use our own kindness, talents and actions to help and care for others in our school family.
