Science Investigations - Change of State

Changes of State

In Science we have been learning about Changes of state.

We learned about the particles behave differently in SOLIDS, LIQUIDS and GASES.

Our drama helped us to visualise how each of these states of matter moves and spreads.

After learning about the properties of a liquid, we investigated the question: "Do all liquids behave the same?"

We chose 5 liquids - water, oil, honey, syrup and ketchup. General class consensus was that they would all be the same, as we agreed they were all liquid, but it soon became clear that the thickness - the VISCOSITY - of the liquid played an important part in how it behaved.

The ketchup just would not drip down the ramp! But the water and oil took only seconds.

Our next investigation was a challenge from Willy Wonka!

He wanted to make a new chocolate river and needed the best method for melting chocolate quickly. Our teams set about helping him - we tried:

1. Melting it in our hands

2. Melting in over hot water

3. Melting in in hot water

4. Melting it in a microwave

Unfortunately, WIlly Wonka then changed his mind and no longer wanted his river and set us the task of turning our liquified chocolate back into a solid.

Fortunately, Year 4 have learned so much this term, it was no challenge for them to know the process for this!
